The Ghostwriter
Dreams are not simply the day’s afterthoughts. They are not random brain activity at night, to be ignored and forgotten by morning. There is a reason why sleep is a fundamental human need, and why we lose our sanity without it. There is a reason why everyone dreams, why our unconscious experience is revered by cultures and religions the world over. Our dream life is just as real and important as our waking life. Our dreamworld is the other side of our physical world, seen with different eyes.
And much like the physical world, we share it with others.
Dr. Jakob Sivers, PhD
Gabrielle Rivers wrote her first novel, Enduring Freedom, at only 16 years old. Inspired by recurring nightmares, she feverishly penned the story of a young Afghan boy living through the American occupation of Afghanistan. It was a global hit, catapulting her into ill-fitting and awkward stardom.
Nine years later, the world patiently awaits her next novel. Gabrielle, however, is struggling with crippling insomnia, complete writer’s block, and a substantial advance she owes back to her publisher.
Facing financial ruin, Gabi enlists the help of a specialist psychiatrist, Dr. Jakob Sivers. He helps her to access and harness the creativity of her dreams, trying to rekindle whatever inspired her years prior. The deeper into her dreamworld she stumbles, the more she finds herself disturbing the ghosts of her past. But inspiration might not be all she finds there.
Other things lurk in the dreamworld, and perhaps not all want to be found.
